Gain describes reflected brightness relative to a reference surface, but a single gain number cannot describe the complete viewing experience.
What Screen Gain Measures
A nominal 1.0-gain screen is intended to reflect light at approximately the level of a standard reference surface. Values above 1.0 direct more light toward a preferred viewing area, while lower-gain surfaces may distribute light differently or support improved perceived black levels.
Why Higher Gain Is Not Always Better
Higher gain can increase on-axis brightness, but may reduce viewing uniformity or the useful viewing cone. In wide rooms, side seats may see a dimmer image. Some combinations of projector position and high-gain surface can also create a visible hotspot.
Gain and Viewing Angle Work Together
A quoted viewing angle should be evaluated with the seating plan. Marketing definitions can vary, so sample testing is valuable for demanding projects. The useful viewing area depends on acceptable brightness and color consistency, not simply whether an image remains visible.
Optical ALR Surfaces Are Directional Systems
Fresnel, lenticular, black-grid and other ALR structures control light direction. Their performance depends on projector type, light-source position, screen orientation and viewer location. Comparing their gain values without considering optical structure can be misleading.
Ambient Light Changes the Decision
In a dark room, neutral color and uniformity may matter more than directional light control. In a bright room, rejecting light from problem directions can be more valuable than maximizing peak brightness.
Use Samples for Market and Project Evaluation
Professional buyers should test material samples with the actual projector or a technically similar model. Evaluate center-to-edge brightness, contrast, color, texture visibility, sparkle, hotspotting and off-axis performance.
Information Needed for a Reliable Recommendation
- Projector model and mounting position
- Screen size and aspect ratio
- Room lighting direction
- Seating width and distance
- Primary content
- Target market and expected price level
These factors provide a far better basis for selection than gain alone.
