Acoustically transparent screens allow the center and front speakers to sit behind the image, improving sound localization and freeing the visible wall from speaker cabinets.
How Woven Materials Work
Woven surfaces use interlaced fibers with microscopic openings between them. They can provide strong sound transmission and are often selected for premium home cinemas and closer seating positions.
Material texture, color balance and weave pattern vary. The fabric should be tensioned evenly to maintain a flat image surface.
How Perforated Materials Work
Perforated screens use a coated film with many small holes. They are widely used in commercial cinema and large venues where viewing distances are longer. Hole diameter, spacing and projector resolution affect visibility and moiré risk.
Sound Performance
Every acoustically transparent material introduces some attenuation. Speaker equalization may be required, particularly at high frequencies. Maintain the recommended distance between speakers and the screen to reduce comb filtering and visible movement.
Image and Moiré Considerations
Moiré can occur when the screen pattern interacts with the projector’s pixel grid. Risk depends on projection resolution, image size, throw distance and material geometry. Sample testing with the intended projector is recommended for critical installations.
Black Backing and Speaker Cavity
A black backing layer can reduce light reflected from speakers and wall surfaces, but it may also affect acoustic transmission. The space behind the screen should be dark and free from reflective objects.
Which Material Fits Which Project?
- Premium residential cinema: woven material is often preferred for close seating and sound quality.
- Commercial cinema: perforated vinyl may provide durability and established large-format performance.
- Large multipurpose venue: evaluate fire requirements, cleaning, handling and replacement logistics.
Installation Requirements
Use a rigid frame and uniform tension. Plan sufficient depth for speakers, acoustic treatment and service access. Avoid placing bright equipment indicators behind the visible image area.
